Who would’ve ever thought many of the ideals of Good Guy Swag could be wrapped up in one beer commercial? One of my friends posted this Guinness ad on Facebook, and I had no idea what to expect. I can only recall one beer commercial that was a tearjerker, and that was this past 2013 Super Bowl’s Budweiser ad, “Raising a Clydesdale.”
The Guinness ad was posted on Youtube Sept. 3, and it’s already gone viral with more than 4 million views. It starts with an intense basketball game of men in wheelchairs. I’m talking super intense. It’s war on the court. The guys are getting pushed, yanked, and knocked out of their wheelchairs. Just to let you know this commercial isn’t about the game, inspirational music plays in the background, which sounds like a Coldplay song, but it’s actually “To Build a Home” by Cinematic Orchestra. The voiceover says, “Dedication. Loyalty. Friendship….” Not your average beer commercial. Before I go any further, watch the ad so I don’t spoil the ending.
You almost think these opposing teams hate each other until the game ends, and everyone stands up except one player. He says, “You guys are getting better at this.” One of his friends says, “Next week buddy.” You realize a bunch of friends are coming together to be “schooled” by their friend in a wheelchair. They are the best of friends any man could ask for. You just know this group of guys would do anything for their physically handicapped friend, and anything for each other too. It’s pretty much the epitome of what true friendship looks like; when men will lay down their pride and their lives for a friend. They all head for a post-game drink.
Then, the voiceover says, “The choices we make reveal the true nature of our character.” Such a great quote. It’s not just about how you treat other people. Don’t forget this is a beer commercial. It’s also in the context of how you drink your alcohol. Every decision you make reveals your character. Make good choices and drink responsibly.
Who knew a beer commercial could be so inspirational? One more tearjerker I’ll remember. “Dedication. Loyalty. Friendship.” Yep, these are characteristics of Good Guy Swag. But, even more importantly, is lending a helping hand to a brother in need. Do you go over and beyond for a friend in need? It’s comradeship like this that will change the world. This commercial already is, and it’s made up of paid actors. Just think of the possibilities in real, authentic brotherhoods.
