8 Easy Summer Grooming Tips for Men

As much as we all love summer, the constant heat and sunshine can be a pain when you have to deal with oily skin, acne, limp hair, sweaty armpits, and the like. Looking well-groomed in the heat isn’t an easy task for sure!

If you are worried about facing the heat this summer, you needn’t fear because help is at hand. Here are 8 easy summer grooming tips to help you look your best no matter how high the temperatures soar.

Cleanse Daily

Keep in mind that men’s skin is oilier by nature so you’ll have to take extra care of it. Your day should start and end by cleansing your face to get rid of all pollutants. Cleansing your skin daily helps it look fresh and makes it less prone to breakouts.

Use a gel face wash that is free of dyes, artificial fragrances, soaps, and alcohol so that your skin doesn’t dry out.

Follow up with a Toner

Using a toner will help your skin remain firm and clear throughout the day. Using a toner after shaving will also prevent ingrown hairs from forming.

Beware of using alcohol-based toners or those that are extremely astringent as they will over-dry your skin. This will only cause your skin to compensate for the dryness by producing more oil.

Don’t Skip the Moisturizer

Just because it’s hot and humid doesn’t mean you don’t need to moisturize your skin. Of course, you needn’t use heavy winter creams in summer; they will leave your skin greasy. What’s more, they’ll wipe right off with your sweat without doing your skin any good.

Look for moisturizers with light formulas that get easily absorbed into your skin and keep it hydrated without giving you an oily sheen.

Nothing Beats a Shower

When it comes to dealing with body odor! If you happen to perspire a lot, a daily shower is a must. You might need to shower more than once a day if you perform vigorous exercise. Showering right after your workout will help wash away sweat and prevent your skin from breaking out.

You don’t have to scrub your whole body every time you take a shower; just wash your chest, armpits, genitals, and feet thoroughly as these areas produce more sweat and are responsible for body odor.

Remember to choose mild soaps and cleansers; you don’t need to be harsh on your skin to get rid of the dirt.

Don’t Use Too Much Cologne

As mentioned, nothing beats a shower when it comes to saying goodbye to body odor. Don’t even try masking body odor with perfume or deodorant; you’ll fail miserably and smell even worse!

A mildly fragrant body wash is all you need to smell appealing. If you must use a perfume or deodorant, use only a bit; you don’t want to reek of perfume. Also be sure to choose subtle scents instead of overpowering ones.

Keep in mind that perfumes react differently to each individual as everybody’s natural body scent is different. So if you buy a perfume without testing how it reacts with your natural scent, chances are that the perfume will lie in your cupboard after just a week’s use because you didn’t like it. Test perfumes before buying by spraying a small amount on your arm and wearing it throughout the day. You can also consider buying sample-sized packs or availing freebies to decide which fragrance works for you.

Shampoo Regularly

You don’t need to shampoo every single day if your scalp doesn’t get excessively oily. Shampoo your hair twice or thrice weekly to get rid of the oil and dirt and keep your mane looking clean.

If you don’t have the time to condition your hair, look for a two-in-one product that can act as both shampoo and conditioner.

Keep Hair Trimmed

If you have long hair, you can always tie them up when you feel the heat getting to you. However, you’ll still have to take care of your locks. On the other hand, a short crop will keep you feeling cool all through the day and you won’t even have to spend a lot of time shampooing and conditioning your hair.

The same applies to your beard and moustache; too much facial hair can be tough to manage in the heat. Keep facial hair trimmed or sport a clean-shaven look this summer. Don’t over-shave though! Your skin will be putting up with a lot when temperatures soar and you don’t want to damage it further by shaving every day. Stick to shaving twice a week and trimming when need be.

No Stepping Out without Sunscreen

Sunscreen is important all through the year and is indispensable in summers as you’ll be spending quite a lot of time outdoors. Exposing yourself to bright and intense sunlight for prolonged periods of time can cause sunburn and give your skin a leathery appearance. Additionally, you put yourself at the risk of developing skin cancer and other skin-related diseases.

Look for a sunscreen that has a high SPF (sun protection factor) and provides protection from both UVA and UVB rays. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before heading out in the sun. Do remember to re-apply it every 2 hours as sunscreen tends to wear off easily. If you’re going to the beach or the pool, re-apply more frequently.

Now that you have these easy tips to help you through summer, nothing can stop you from having your share of fun!
